1. Schedule your newborn session to take place within the first two weeks.

Newborns tend to be sleepiest during their first two weeks, which is why I recommend newborn sessions during this window whenever possible. Babies are typically more settled, and sessions naturally feel slower and easier. After that point, babies can become more alert, experience more gas, or develop baby acne, so those first two weeks really are the sweet spot. Now, I have definitely photographed babies older than two weeks as a "newborn" session because sometimes life gets in the way but I always recommend scheduling your newborn session during your 7th or 8th month of pregnancy, with a tentative date within 10 days of your due date.Booking early means it’s one less thing on your mind once your baby arrives. Some families choose to reserve multiple milestones at once—such as maternity, newborn, six months, and one year—so everything is planned ahead of time and what a beautiful way to document your baby's first year!

2. Feed & Change Baby About 30 Minutes Before I Arrive

A full, comfortable baby helps the session start smoothly. If possible:

-Feed your baby

-Change their diaper

-Dress them in something easy to remove (a simple swaddle works perfectly)

Don’t worry if your baby needs to eat again once I’m there—this is completely expected. We always follow your baby’s lead.

3. Tidy the Primary Bedroom

Your bedroom is often the heart of an in‑home newborn session. It’s where the light is soft, the moments are intimate, and where you’re most comfortable. Focus on just a few things:- Make the bed- Clear off nightstands- Tuck away anything visually distractingThat’s it. No deep cleaning required. Just make sure things like phone chargers, mail and medicine are tucked away during your session. I’ll always work around your space and choose angles that feel natural and flattering.

4. Prepare Outfits (But Don’t Stress)

You don’t need to guess what will photograph well—I help every client with wardrobe planning ahead of time. Beforehand, we’ll go over:-What colors work best together-What photographs beautifully in your home-How to keep things comfortable and flatteringBefore your session arrives, you’ll already know exactly what to wear. Comfortable, neutral, and timeless choices always photograph beautifully.

5. Snacks for Older Siblings = Happy Siblings

If you have older children, giving them a snack before I arrive can make a huge difference. As a mom you know, a fed child is a happier, more cooperative child—which will help keep the session flowing naturally. I keep the sibling portion of the session short, relaxed, and playful so everyone stays comfortable and engaged.

Your Images, Thoughtfully Preserved

As a full-service newborn photographer, my work doesn’t end when your session is over. While birth announcements and digital files are wonderful, your baby’s first days deserve to live beyond your phone or computer. After your in-home newborn session, I work with you to thoughtfully select and design:

-Custom wall art for your home

-Heirloom albums that tell the story of this time in your family’s life

-Professionally printed products made to last

I guide you through every step of the process—from image selection to final installation—so your newborn photographs become tangible pieces of your family’s story. These are the images you’ll walk past every day, flip through years from now, and eventually share with your child as they grow.

A Final Note for Mom

The early days with a new baby are tender. You’ve just done something incredible, and your only job during your newborn session is to show up as you are. While I’m photographing your baby, you get permission to sit down, rest, and take a breath. I’ll gently guide you when it’s time to step in, and I’ll always be mindful of how you’re feeling—physically and emotionally. Your home doesn’t need to be perfect.Your baby doesn’t need to follow a schedule. And you don’t need to perform. This session is about preserving the feeling of these early days in an honest, calm, and natural way.
